Planning Stage

This activity in the main requires our company to prepare reports to assist developers, architects, owners, structural engineers and builders to determine important pre-construction project parameters such as excavation methods, foundation methods, hazard management, impacts on neighboring properties and to minimize any variations that may lead to budget overruns and consequently the viability of the overall project and its ultimate outcome.

This process is dependent on the job size and may simply be a matter of a site walkover with desktop report taken from previous known jobs in the area or to a more complex report with full service including the following key activities:

• Determination of the proposed project Construction materials to be used to determine structural loadings firstly identification using geotechnical and geological maps

• Identify the strength of foundation materials by Field investigation including in-situ sampling for later laboratory or using specialized equipment for in-situ testing

• Assessments of Natural and/or Man-made hazards such as unstable or slip ground conditions either identified by slope stability analysis process or known from previous mapping

• Examples: (Risk Analysis Assessments, Test Pit evaluation at demolition stage, Road & Pavement analysis & Slab-on-ground assessments AS 2780 - 2011

Design Stage

In our case, we consult as Geotechnical engineers and thereby support our structural engineering designs with our expertise, however, we are often asked to support other geotechnical engineers as a supplement to their assessments and hence by collaboration, this checking mechanism works to ensure that before any work commences, the final structural design is guaranteed. These services may include physical designs and details for:

• Cut and fill slopes protection designs

• Earthworks, Earth & Rock Dams & Retention Basin Designs

•   Geotechnical Analysis & Modeling Slope Stability

• Ground improvement techniques for main roads and heavy duty industrial pavements

• Instrumentation and monitoring systems such vibration monitoring

• Contiguous Piling and Screw Pile capacities with design & Details

• Reinforced earth structural Designs

• All types of Retaining wall Designs

• Examples: Detention/Retention facilities in Hydraulic Designs, Retaining Walls all types, Swimming pool & residential construction using screw piles

Construction Stage

This stage in geotechnical engineering is important for major civil and structural works is so far as confirmation is mandatory for the originally assessed excavation/foundations conditions has credence and can be signed-off.  It is also consistent with continuing construction advice and monitoring as the project proceeds to completion.
